Activities
Daily technologies - Iberian Society
The provision of clothing and fabrics for varied uses was one of the core activities. The fabrication process depended on the type of fibers used, which could be of vegetable or animal origin. The vegetable fibers used were esparto and linen, and the animal one, wool.
Yarn production is evident by the presence of fusayolas of different weight and size, which would result in yarns of different thicknesses and resistance. These yarns become tissue with the help of various types of looms, though not easy to locate in archaeological contexts, since most wood parts would not have survived; the most frequent ones are called vertical looms. These structures were mobile and transportable from one room to another. We know about their presence thanks to the loom weights that have endured and by the iconography on some ceramic vessels such as those from Sant Miquel de Lliria (Valencia), which depict this activity. Another type of loom, of was much more flexible location, is the horizontal plates loom, which produced long and narrow cloth pieces. They have been recorded in the necropolis of El Cigarralejo, (Mula, Murcia), where also other items related to this activity have been found, such as bone needles and awls, mostly in female graves.
