Taking care - Iberian society
One of the fundamental roles of women in Iberian culture was biological and social reproduction; therefore, breast-feeding of the creatures was one of the basic and central female social practices.
Despite the absence of a detailed knowledge of how Iberian society raised and educated their offspring we can suggest about different forms of lactation, thanks to the scarce remnants found in archaeological contexts (domestic, sacred and funerary) and to iconographic representations, breastfeeding being one of them, but not the only on, as it is also evident from artificial items related to child feeding, such as breast pumps and bottles, which would facilitate this task to those women who had some kind of biological problem for natural breastfeeding.
It is noteworthy in this regard, that there are few representations in the Iberian plastic of mothers in breastfeeding attitude, and their recurrent interpretation beyond everyday contexts, i.e.as mother goddesses (nurturing or kourotrophas).
